Cayman Makes History in Junior Pan American Games 3×3 Debut

The Cayman Islands national U23 men’s team wrapped up a proud and historic campaign at the Junior Pan American Games 3×3 Basketball Tournament in Asunción, Paraguay, marking the first time Cayman has ever participated in the prestigious event.

A Tournament of Firsts

From the opening tip, this tournament was about making history — and Team Cayman delivered. Competing in a field of experienced basketball nations, our young athletes made an instant impact by earning Cayman’s first-ever victory at the Junior Pan Am Games, upsetting previously unbeaten Mexico 19–17 in what was one of the standout results of the group stage.

That win came after a tough loss to host Paraguay in the opening game, but showed the team’s resilience, talent, and belief. Led by standout performances — including a near-perfect shooting night from Brad Lansdell — Cayman advanced to the quarterfinals, proving they could compete with the region’s best.

Quarterfinal Battle and Closing Games

In the quarterfinal round, Cayman faced powerhouse Argentina who became the eventual gold medalists. Despite a valiant effort, the team fell 21–10, ending their chances at a medal finish but not their momentum. Cayman went on to face Puerto Rico in a placement game, and finally Paraguay once more for 7th place. Both contests were closely contested, with Cayman showing consistent grit and teamwork, but ultimately falling short.

A Foundation for the Future

Though the team finished 8th overall, their performance goes far beyond wins and losses. This campaign has cemented Cayman’s place in international basketball and shown the potential of our young talent. More importantly, it has inspired a nation and opened doors for future athletes to dream big and compete proudly on the world stage.

The Cayman Islands Basketball Association (CIBA) would like to thank the players, coaching staff, families, sponsors, and supporters who made this journey possible. Your belief and commitment helped create a moment that will be remembered for years to come.

Final Thoughts

Cayman’s first step into the Junior Pan Am Games has laid a strong foundation. With hard work and continued investment in youth development, this won’t be the last time we hear Cayman’s name called on international courts. The journey is just beginning.

Heart and Hustle: Cayman Women vs. Chile and Argentina

The Cayman Islands women’s team started their day with a riveting game against Chile. Playing with unmatched hustle and precision, they gave the Chilean team a run for their money. The final score of 16-10 may have favored Chile, but the real story was the spirited performance of the Cayman women. Their defensive prowess and coordinated teamwork were evident, making it clear that they were a force to be reckoned with.

Head Coach Wendy Manzanares expressed her pride, “Our ladies have shown immense growth and heart. Today’s game was a testament to their dedication and hard work.”

Cayman’s U23 Teams show Grit and Determination

In the high-energy atmosphere of Mexico City, the Cayman Islands’ U23 3×3 basketball teams faced formidable opponents in the U23 3×3 Nations League. Despite the final scores on July 24 showing losses against Mexico (21-10) for the men’s team and Puerto Rico (21-5) for the women’s team, the journey and performance of these young athletes tell a story of resilience, improvement, and unwavering spirit.

Men’s Team: A Battle Against Mexico

Facing the powerhouse team of Mexico, the Cayman Islands’ men’s team entered the game with determination and a strategic mindset. The match, held on July 24, 2024, was a test of their defensive skills and teamwork. Though the score reflected a 21-10 loss, it does not capture the relentless defense that the Cayman players put forth. Each possession was contested, and every point Mexico earned was hard-fought. The Cayman Islands’ team forced Mexico to adapt their strategies and work tirelessly for their win, showcasing the significant improvement in the Cayman’s defensive game.

Women’s Team: Courage Against Puerto Rico

Similarly, the women’s team took on Puerto Rico in a challenging game on the same day. The final score of 21-5 indicates a loss, yet it masks the effort and heart displayed on the court. The Cayman Islands’ women demonstrated a commendable defensive strategy, making Puerto Rico earn each basket through persistent effort. Their ability to adapt and fight against a technically superior team highlighted their growth and potential in the sport.

Building for the Future

Both games, though ending in losses, were not defeats in the truest sense. The improvement in defensive tactics and the ability to challenge more experienced teams is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Cayman Islands’ U23 teams. These matches were crucial learning experiences, building blocks for future successes. The players’ perseverance and grit in the face of tough competition embody the true spirit of sportsmanship.

As the U23 3×3 Nations League progresses, the Cayman Islands’ teams have proven that they are not to be underestimated. With each game, they grow stronger, more cohesive, and more skilled. Their journey is not just about the scores but about the development, the teamwork, and the heart they bring to every match. The Cayman Islands’ U23 teams are on the rise, and their story is far from over. The future holds promise, and with the foundation they are building now, their time for victory will surely come.
