Cayman Islands Sweep Gold in Stop 1 of the U23 3×3 Caribbean Cup
The Cayman Islands made a powerful statement in Stop 1 of the U23 3×3 Caribbean Cup, capturing gold medals in both the women’s and men’s competitions after two undefeated tournament runs.
It was an outstanding showing for Cayman basketball and another important milestone in the continued development of the country’s 3×3 programme.
Cayman Women Go Unbeaten to Claim Gold
The Cayman Islands Women’s Team delivered an impressive performance from start to finish, completing the tournament undefeated and taking home the gold medal.
Representing Cayman were:
- Lorrie Brown
- Shantell Wilks
- Bethany Ebanks
- Neandra Forbes-Morgan
The four-player squad demonstrated the qualities that have become increasingly important to Cayman’s growing 3×3 programme—toughness, teamwork, confidence and resilience.
Their undefeated run was particularly significant as Cayman continues to invest in creating more international opportunities for its female athletes. The gold medal provides another indication of the potential within the women’s programme and the progress being made through increased exposure to high-level 3×3 competition.
Cayman Men Make History with U23 Gold
The Cayman Islands Men were equally impressive, completing their own undefeated run to the championship.
The gold-medal team featured:
- Xzavier Miller
- Nathaniel Anderson-Hurlston
- Alwin Buttrum Jr.
- Daric Ebanks
Their victory marked Cayman’s first 3×3 gold medal in this age group, making the accomplishment an important moment in the history of the national programme.
More importantly, the performance sent a clear message: Cayman can compete with anyone in the region.
Despite representing one of the Caribbean’s smallest countries, the Cayman Islands continues to demonstrate that population size does not determine what can be accomplished on the basketball court.
A Major Step Forward for Cayman 3×3
Winning both categories makes Stop 1 an especially memorable tournament for the Cayman Islands Basketball Association.
The results are also a reflection of the larger investment being made in 3×3 basketball. CIBA continues to create opportunities for players to compete internationally while developing the coaches, officials, managers and infrastructure required to build a sustainable national programme.
For these eight athletes, however, this tournament will always represent something special.
